Why International Schools Use English As A Medium Of Education

International Schools

The English language is among the most commonly spoken languages in the world, and it serves a variety of purposes in this globalised world. Its use ranges from politics and economics to science, technology, media, and information. Its proficiency provides access to more information than any other language. The value of acquiring the English language and using it as a medium of education is a widely debated issue. Whilst some prefer English to their mother tongue as a medium of instruction, others are sceptical of English language dependency from a young age.

Children’s first language learning may be hampered or lost if they are forced to switch their schooling language too early or suddenly to a second language, and their self-confidence may deteriorate, leading to a lack of drive, school failure, and early educational exit. Of course, as previously said, this does not preclude the introduction of a second language at a young age in Singapore international school.

Because English is the only means of communication in many nations, its use as an international language is increasing with time. English is also commonly used in the literature and media department to produce books; most authors write in English because the vast majority of readers only know English and they can best convey their views in that language.

1. Improve and widen employment opportunities

English proficiency is a highly sought-after talent in the worldwide workplace because it is the primary language of communication around the globe, and one of the advantages of learning English is that it considerably increases your job chances.

On their CV/resume, job applicants who are fluent in English have a higher chance of being hired. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, several countries are likely to endure economic decline and unemployment in 2021. English makes it easier to have an opportunity in this crisis. The programming languages developed by American firms and across the globe are in English and it is still the most commonly used and the most significant global language of programming and coding.

2. Access to global education systems and establishments

Another motivation to learn English is to have access to some of the world’s greatest educational systems and institutions.

Many of the world’s greatest international school Singapore are located in the United Kingdom and the United States or use English as the primary language for their curriculum, therefore English proficiency is essential when applying. If you want to attend an English-speaking institution, such as Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, or MIT, you’ll need to improve your English skills to apply for the IBDP Diploma.

3. Improve communication skills

When you study English as a second language, you’re also learning new ways of thinking and expressing yourself, both verbally and in writing.

As you understand more about how the language works and how to use it in connection with social, academic, and professional settings, learning English early on can help you express yourself more clearly.

4. Entertainment and popular culture

Many of the world’s greatest films and television shows were made in English, much of it in Hollywood, and English fluency will allow you to enjoy and admire them in their original state – with or without captions.

The same can be said for literature, because of so many world-famous works written in the English language, you’ll have no shortage of choices. There’s something for everyone, from JK Rowling to Shakespeare!

Viewing and having to read English language media will help you improve your language skills, especially your listening and reading abilities. When it comes to practising your speaking abilities, familiarity with this kind of world-famous pop culture will provide you with an unlimited supply of discussion subjects.

5. Boost your self-assurance

No matter what your motive for learning is, being able to speak another language is a prizes and recognised talent. The pride and self-confidence that comes from experience that your language abilities can enable you to work and travel in many parts of the world, and converse with people from all cultures and backgrounds, is a final advantage of learning English, or indeed any foreign language.

Countries all around the world have succeeded in replacing their native tongues with English, producing world-class scientists, researchers, technicians, and philosophers. Language barriers exist only for as long as there is a lack of suitable incentive for the development of information in the target language. To aid this shift, the government should encourage unique scientific work and the publication and adoption of books in english.

Furthermore, research from around the world has proven that children may learn numerous languages if they are taught from a young age. We can aggressively promote regional languages too without jeopardizing our ability to communicate in English, which can be taught as a separate subject.
